Conflict is a literary device characterised by a struggle between two opposing forces. Conflict provides crucial tension in any story and is used to drive the narrative forward. It is the key element that provides interest, tension and suspense.

Consider the following conflicts:

  • Character Vs. Character

  • Character Vs God/fate

  • Character Vs Self

  • Character Vs. Society

  • Character Vs. Nature

  • Character Vs. Supernatural

  • Character Vs. Technology

The importance of narrative conflicts lies in their ability to move the story forward. In works of narrative, conflict is the challenge main characters need to solve to achieve their goals.
