Character Profiles

Character Profiles

Your character profile is a record of everything you know about your character, from their origins, backstory, personality, traits and physical appearance. Noting their relationships, routines, hopes, fears and motivation.

A character profile is a detailed description of a fictional character’s life and personality. A good character profile helps the writer get into the mind of that character and make them come alive for readers.

Character profiles are working documents; it’s meant to help the writer, and provides an in-depth resource that the writer can check at a glance in case they forget any important information. Invest in your character profile and know it’s not set in stone – as your characters develop, they may do so out of your control. As odd as this sounds, this is what you are actually aiming for, and you will know you are on the right track.

Also, it’s worth mentioning:

Consider creating chapter profiles too. When you consider the average novel is around 80,000 words; that’s a lot of text, and it makes sense to have separate chapter profiles to help keep the writer true to their storyline, while having a quick reference to refer to.
